Maiji Mountain Grottoes

"Maiji Mountain, across the Qing Wei River in the north, two dang in the south, five hundred miles of hills, where the wheat is half, rises a piece of stone, millions of searches, and looks like a farm wheat, so there is this name". It is located in the Qinling Mountains, about 35 kilometers southeast of Tianshui City, Gansu Province. The surrounding mountains are strange and the forests are beautiful, and the streams and stones are reflected together. It is known as the "Crown of Qin Land Forest and Spring.

Maiji Mountain Altitude1742 meters, the top of the mountain is above the ground.142 meters, there are 194 existing Buddhist cave niches, more than 7,200 clay sculptures, stone clay sculptures, and more than 1,300 square meters of murals. All the cave niches are excavated on the cliffs and distributed on the east and west cliffs. There are 54 caves in Dongya and 140 caves in Xiya. Most scholars believe that the excavation of the Maijishan Grottoes began in the post-Qin Dynasty, and went through the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It has been continuously excavated and repaired. It was praised by the sculptor Liu Kaiqu as the "Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall". Maijishan Grottoes retain a large number of religious, artistic, architectural and other physical materials, which enrich the history of ancient Chinese culture and are of great significance in the history of grotto development.
